my son has my old iPhone which has the same Apple ID setup as me because he’s only 9 but the phone has just stopped recognising the correct Apple ID and won’t remove the Activation Lock. This has only just happened. The Apple ID I have used is correct.

You try go into your iCloud account from your personal computer's web browser and remove activation lock? Like tell to "Forget This Device?"
