Updating my iPad

I haven't updated my iPad for a very long time and I finally would like to. But when I go into settings to the software update section, it won't allow me to install IOS 12 without connecting my iPad to iTunes on my computer. I am extremely confused as to how to do this. Please someone help. Thank you!
