When I deleted my "Archive" folder in Apple Mail, all of my Notes associated with that email account were also deleted. I moved all of the deleted emails back to the inbox folder (from Trash). Now, how do I restore the notes app with the emails containing notes? Why are notes even associated with an email? Not sure it has any benefits.

Good questions! When you use Notes with an account other than iCloud, what happens behind the scenes is actually a bit of a hack—or "workaround", if you like. The app creates a folder called Notes on the email server (Gmail, Yahoo or whatever) and stores your notes as sent email messages. You can see the effect if you use webmail, i.e. access the email in a browser: along with any personal folders you might have made for your emails, there's one called Notes, and each of your notes is there—technically they're just emails. So, my suggestion is to recreate a Notes folder in your email and put the relevant messages there. Note that it might take a while for the Notes app to discover them.
Thank you, martinedwards1248! This answer has been super helpful, so far. I am hopeful it will be the solution. In all my online searching, this was the first I learned that there was a "Notes" folder within my email browser window. In my case, this folder still exists but most of my notes no longer reside there. I am in the process of locating all of my (previously deleted) "Notes" emails and getting them into the existing "Notes" folder. Quite the pain but I use those notes a lot.
I currently have notes going to a Gmail account but am thinking it would be wise to have them go to my iCloud email. Either way, this is going to take a bit of time and I wanted to return to this discussion and at least extend my thanks for your help. Will return to comment on final outcome. Thanks again.
