Campsite wifi channel selection

We are on a campsite with paid for/ username and password wifi.

They are broadcasting many channels on both 2.4 and 5Ghz all with the same name "Camping"

How do I make my MacBook Pro select the 5ghz channels? It automatically selects a 2.4 ghz channel, which is slow compared to the odd time the Mac has suddenly selected a 5Ghz channel.

This has helped me with that issue. Open System Preferences > Network and select your wifi connection from the left pane. From the main pane click the Advanced..." button to get this:

As Grant suggests, move close to the router so you are on the speed you prefer, then drag that network name to the top of the list. Whatever is at the top of the list should be the network selected the next time you log in.

The usual way to differentiate (if YOU controlled the Router) would be to give the 5GHz a slightly different name, so that you could selectively connect to it instead of 2.4GHz. If you ask now, maybe by the next visit the camping owner will have that figured out.

Your Mac wants to connect to the strongest signal available. Once connected, it would rather hold onto that signal than switch.

It sounds goofy (because it IS goofy) but you could try walking around and getting closer to the Router to see if it would connect to the 5GHz, then go back to your campsite and hope it stays.

If that's the complete list, only one ZyXEL Router has any 5GHz, so it is the one whose 5GHz should be renamed to something else to allow selective connection to it.

There are at least three Ubiquiti Routers with different M.A.C. numbers using 2.4 GHz band. Two on channel 11, one on channel 6. There is likely one older ZyXEL router on channel 6. Channel 11 does not seem to be working right, as it did not show up on the signal graph.

The two ZyXEL Routers on channel 1 and channel 100 have M.A.C. numbers that are sequential, so they are likely coming from one Physical router.

When you use the same name and password for multiple Routers, you combine them into ONE Network, and allow Roaming between Routers on that Network. When named separately, if you move out of range and you would need to re-connect to a different network.

Thanks for the reply. So the only way, is to rename the 5Ghz, that'll be fun trying to explain that in German to an Austrian!

We are on the site for the whole winter (mad on skiing) and it's peak season. Will try and move after the crazy season is over, nearer to the 5GHz router. We were using the 5Ghz last year, obviously just by chance.

I really thought there would be something in the settings that would allow you to choose the wifi channel, when there are multiple ones in a network.

I think those graphs ¿from Wi-Fi Explorer? are really helpful in understanding what is going on over-the-air. The other setting change that may improve reception (reduce complaints) would be to set channel selection to "automatic". When you do that, when the Router starts up, it listens for a moment to every channel, then chooses one that is least busy from what it can detect.

It is not an accident that every debugging procedure starts with "Cycle the power to your Router".
