My desktop powers on but won't complete the startup process. I've tried the recommended solutions on the support page to no avail. Has anyone found a remedy withOUT calling support?

This could be a failed HD, however before giving up please reset the NVRAM and attempt to restart in Safe Mode (which can take up to 10 minutes to complete). If neither work, then it is time to take it to your local Apple Authorized Service Provider
