So you gave your ex your iPhone for about an hour and he jailbroke it and put spyware on it? Or does your ex know your Apple ID and password?

Currently if your iPhone is not jailbroken there is no spyware you can put on an iPhone. If you think he knows the passcode o your iPhone change it (use 6 digits). And change the password on your Apple ID to something very difficult to break.

I’m not a her but yes, DFU mode completely removes the OS (jailbroken or not) from the iPhone and when you restore it (don’t do so from your backup) sets it up as a clean new device.

Keep in mind while you were sleeping your ex would need about 45 minutes to an hour to jailbreak your iPhone. Before doing the steps I pointed out do a spotlight search on your iPhone for the word Cydia. If you don’t find it you are probably no jailbroken and you don’t have any spyware. But to be sure take the steps I recommended, including the strong 6 digit passcode and changing your Apple ID and any other passwords.

In addition to the above reset-and-reload info, disable any unknown or unwanted folks listed in the Find My tracking.

Also change your email server passwords, and absolutely verify your recovery questions are not known to your ex, as these are all paths to wrest control of your Apple ID. Social media passwords, too. Also enable two-factor authentication on your Apple ID(s), and on any other critical accounts you have, and have your Apple ID trusted telephone number and fallback number set appropriately. Preferably set to a telephone number not known and not accessible to your ex, if your ex is persistent about these shenanigans. I’d probably reset and check for and update the firmware for the network router, if your ex is technically inclined. Wi-Fi password, too.

As for others and suggestions of calling the police, that can be somewhere around hazardous, to futile. Check with the local shelter or victim’s rights folks for other options and suggestions. If you have the budget for it, chat with a lawyer.

If you use the steps I listed above it will factory restore it, more so that erasing all contents. Since you don’t find anything related to cydia on your iPhone you are probably safe to use your backup but that also means you aren’t jailbroken and there is no spyware on you iPhone. But if your ex knows your Apple ID password they can use that to see iMessages and mail.

Here’s the two-factor authentication info, and with links to the trusted recovery numbers info:

There are other discussions possible, such as two-factor on gmail and social media. That exposure varies.

I’d really encourage an informal chat with the local victims‘ rights and shelter folks too, as they’ll likely have comments and suggestions. This depending on how aggressive the situation might be, or might become, or might escalate. (There’s a whole lot I don’t know about your situation, and which probably also isn’t even prudent to discuss here.)

ps: I added changing the Wi-Fi password above.
