iPad loses books when syncing

I'm an avid reader, but prefer paper over digital. I do keep a couple of books (8 in total on my iPad) just in case I run out of reading material while sitting in a waiting room.

Strange enough, each time I sync my iPad through iTunes on the Mac, I lose four of those books. At that time they don't even appear in the list of books that can be seen in iTunes. I boot Books, and there I can still see the books I want on my iMac. Usually, I have to quit iTunes, reboot it, and hope the books are now visible in the list of available books, so that I can select them again (if they were not selected; but mostly they are selected and will load when syncing again.

Just for that reason I will usually keep my iPad away from my Mac to charge it, as I know I will lose those books again, and will have to go through all the trouble to get them back.

Is this a well-known problem? Can anything be done?

Mac is running 10.14.6 and iTunes 12.9.5.5. iPad5 is running iOS 13.3.1, and this issue has already been going on for some time.

Hello lescornwell,

Thanks for posting your question about your issue with syncing books on your iPad. I'm glad to see if I can assist.

For clarification, are you saying that the four books in question are completely removed from the device after you connect it to your Mac? Or are they not showing in your Device Summary as shown below? Locate and view your connected device on your computer

"iTunes 12

View your device by clicking on the device's icon in the upper-left corner of the iTunes window.

If you have multiple devices connected to your computer, click the device icon, then choose your device from the menu.

"

Are the four books in question from the same source, or are all eight books from the same source?

It might help to try fully un-syncing your book content fro the iPad and then re-syncing it to see if that helps: Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer

Take care.

OK, I hooked up my iPad (which was fully loaded) to the iMac, iTunes launched automatically, and syncing started also automatically. To my surprise (bad for the screenshot, good for not losing my books), the books remained on the iPad after syncing. I am including a screenshot with more information.

I will repeat this again in a couple of days, hoping that this time my issue above (iPad loses books when syncing) is valid.

The four books marked in red (novels) are from the same source (but not the  store). The other ones are from two different sources.
