MacBook A1342 - Battery explosion

I believe my MacBook A1342 battery has exploded and I’m looking for a way to safely remove the hard Drive so I can back up photos I have stored on here that haven’t been uploaded to my iCloud. I am a bit of a novice when it comes to anything technical like this and am a little wary of the health and safety precautions I’ve read about when doing some research in to this particular battery issue. If it is safer for me to count my losses in regards to the photos stored on here, what is the safest way to dispose of the laptop? Thank you in advance for any assistance.

MacBook, macOS 10.13

A Few a Thoughts:

Data Recovery:

AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider):

Take this to an AASP. They would deal with data recovery from older items, for particular cases like this.

Contacting an AASP:

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to fix this MacBook Air

Disposal:

Being hazardous materials (i.e. Lithium Ion) may reside, I insist that you take this to a place for proper disposal. Some retailers out there recycle and dispose of old, unwanted items free of charge, meaning you would not have to pay even penny for disposal. Drop it off at the local dump, and they may charge you quite a bit.
