Can’t remove user in High Sierra:Users & Groups

Hi, When I attempt to remove a non-admin user in Users & Groups via the normal interface as an admin user, I’m prompted for the user's pw as vs the admin pw. The operation fails whatever the password, it seems.

Changing her pw seems to have no effect, either. I simply can’t perform the delete operation (via the ‘-‘ sign) successfully. Before I get to dscl level, can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong here?

Thanks,

GAM

You must be logged in to the Admin account in order to remove a user account. You do not need to know the other user's password, only your password. The user must be logged out of their account before you can delete it.

Some Thoughts:

Use a New Administrator:

Create a new Administrator. Try this once more. If it works, the it is something configured in your current Administrator account.

Rid of Security Software:

So, try a new Administrator. And rid of any and all Security Software installed on your Mac. Security Software just gets in the way. Use the uninstaller to uninstall it. If you just drag it into the trash, cache files will just lay about. Contact the developer of the Security Software for this.

Use MalwareBytes for Mac

This is software that searches for malware/adware. So, scan with it and then remove what is found. Once removed, uninstall MalwareBytes for Mac. Then restart the Mac. This software has been created by Long Time Users of these Forums. So, that makes it reliable for Macs.

Downloads:

  1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac
  2. Malwarebytes uninstaller

Does this still occur? If so...

Boot into Safe Mode and try this:

(hold down shift upon boot until the login screen appears). See if this is still an issue. Safe Mode lets items run as default, without changes whatsoever. That is possible because caches are temporarily disabled while in Safe Mode.

The only other reason I can think of is something is in use in that user Account, have you tried it in Safe Mode?

BTW, Kappy was not judging your knowledge at all, only providing the most common reason, with little to no info from you as to your expertise, Kappy is good, but his Crystal Ball is possibly getting a little cloudy. :)

Hi Kappy - I said I was an admin user. The fact that I said, “before I get to the dscl level” should also have told you that I know enough to only attempt this operation as an admin, assuming you know what dscl is, of course.

And I can assure you, I’m not hallucinating. I’m being prompted, as an admin, for the user in question’s password - not that of the admin user. Check. It. Out:

Get it? Got it? Good.
