Um so a staple was on my keyboard when I closed my Mac and went through the screen and smashed it. It now doesn’t work at all. Just wondering whether I should she apple or go to a local laptop fixer?

If the machine is not obsolete, then taking it to a "fixit shop" is not a good idea. Apple will not service the machine ever again, if you do that. Apple will not service a model that is obsolete: Vintage and obsolete products.
Otherwise, only Apple will have Apple parts, so you are wise to take it an Apple Store for repair.

Yes, it will cost money. You will need to take it in for an estimate. Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. Also, see How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Distributor (AAD).
