The last printer drivers Epson shows for the C88 is for macOS High Sierra. Is your printer working at all on Catalina, as I would suspect these older Epson drivers to be 32-bit. This device is not supported by Apple's AirPrint.
Try the following, with your printer powered on, ready to print (not in stand by mode) and connected to the Mac, go to:
Apple Menu > System Preferences > Printers >
click to select the correct printer in the list
click on Options & Supplies
click on Supply Levels
If you can possibly ignore low ink indicators and carry on printing til it spits feathers you can usually get another 20% out of them. They rely on ink sales to underwrite the low printer prices.

just ink levels. otherwise works fine. And i fairly recently bought it, ugh. Interesting tidbit: The ink button flashes red which I take as there is a low ink cartridge. If I press that button the entire ink cartridge holder moves back and forth and stops under a built in arrow. It has stopped over two different cartridges the two times I did it. I replace that cartridge, hit the button, the ink carrier goes back where it should and the flashing red light stops. I am going with it as a "low ink cartridge indicator"....
Success, I think you are OK here.

Have you lost all interaction with the utilities as admin for managing the printer— or just print levels ?
Might be time for new printer(?)

I am using a Samsung ML2950 series laser printer via Apple's AirPrint, and my toner level is shown in the following panel. Would your Epson normally display your C88 levels here in the Options & Supplies… panel?
Right but that printer does not support AIrprint and the suggestion below did not work either with a Word document already to print and it did not work. I believe the printer just too old vine though it was recently purchased does not support Apple . But thanks!
Thanks. I have an IMAC Catalina and MAC Pro High Sierra OS. The printer works on both but no ink level info, which is a real drag. Thanks! Now I know....
I think someone earlier said Airprint was not supported why my printer thanks
It was about the location of the toner/ink supply reporting, not about AirPrint at all.
