Can't play downloaded movies copied to external drive

I used to backup the movies that I purchased in iTunes to an external drive to save space on my MacBook and watch them later using QuickTime on either my Mac Mini or my MacBook, both of which are authorized. With the new Apple TV app and the new HLS format I can only use the Apple TV app. The problem started with a recent update. I can't play the movies I've purchased and then copied to my external hard drive even with the Apple TV app. Why? Do I have to use streaming services and download every time?

Hi Melstorm.

I did some additional research on this. HLS is an abbreviation for HTTP Live Streaming. It breaks video files up into much smaller chunks and adds a second file that instructs the player on how to put them together. The result is much better performance for streaming video on a multitude of devices and varying network conditions. Bottom line is that this format is made to be played in a web browser or streaming video player which is why you can't see or open them in QuickTime.

The TV app uses a library that is on the internal drive and there is currently not a way to have that library access files from two different locations. Your best option may be to use the capability of the app to play content from multiple libraries. You would create a library (not just the downloaded files) on the external drive and launch the TV app to address the external library when you want to access your backed-up files.

As far as the current inability of the library to access files from multiple locations, if you would like to leave feedback for Apple about that, you can do so here: Feedback - macOS - Apple Using the drop-down menu for Feedback Type, choose the option for Feature Request. In the drop-down menu for Feedback Area, choose Applications/Utilities Cheers.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Unfortunately, this was (and still is for some movies) the case for movies with the extension m4v. For the newer HLS format, only option to watch the movie seems to be Apple TV app. And this became impossible recently once the location of the movie is changed. I am a movie enthusiast and I need to back them up on my external drives. I cannot download a movie every time I want to watch it. QuickTime doesn't show up as in the open with menu and QuickTime itself doesn't let you pick these files.

Hello Melstorm and welcome to Apple Support Communities.

I see you are having issues playing already downloaded movies using the TV app on a Mac.

You should still be able to access those files using QuickTime Player.
