Snapshot hangs doing video screen recording

I've not been able to make a screen recording movie with the new snapshot app in Catalina. I can start the recording but the controls then disappear so there is no way to push the stop recording button as per the help file. If I click on Snapshot icon it tells me the app is not responding. All I can do at that point is restart MacOS. I'm running the current MacOS Catalina 10.15.3
