what are the best printers for macbook pro?

Hi,

I need to buy a new printer for my macbook pro. The one that I used for many years HP Photosmart 1000 stopped working.

What types do you recommend? I only need a good printer (B/W and color), no scanner or other.

I am still working on a 13 inch Macbook pro from 2013 with OS-x 10.9.5. So the printer needs to be compatible with this one. But if I buy a new macbook pro in a few months the printer needs to work on this new one too.

Thanks for your help and recommendations.

Literally any AirPrint-enabled printer or MFD will work with a new Mac. Unless the printer specifically indicates AirPrint don't buy it.

If you are motivated to keep older, non-AirPrint devices in service, consider using one of the AirPrint-enabled print servers also described on that page. The price of one of them may exceed the price of a new printer though.

Epson ecotank Inkjet Printer Series:

Epson makes an ecotank Printer — You’d Get 7,500 pages/cartridge. It is inkjet. So, as long as it is compatible with AirPrint, it’s the best, IMO.

I use it, whether it be photos, documents, or whatever — So, FWIW, it would meet your needs. I’d go with that.

A printer's compatibility is determined by operating system, not the hardware (typically). To avoid unplanned obsolescence look for printers that were recently released as opposed to a printer that has been sold for years. Typically a printer manufacturer will release a new printer and then support it with driver updates for some years to come - seven seems to be about typical but don't hold me to that.

Other than that I can give only general advice because you've not said whether the printer is mostly for photos or text or whether laser or ink is preferred. So all I can say is that I prefer Canon for inkjet printers but not laser. I prefer HP for color laser printers and Brother for laser BW. These are all subjective; others are likely to disagree with me and who is to say they are wrong?

In my experience, Brother has consistently done a good job with macOS support. They seem to continue offering driver updates long after many of the units in use have likely been replaced. However, my entire experience with Brother has been with their b/w laser printers. Our first one worked for 13 years before suffering a mechanical failure.

I'm off HP printers and MFs. We had a HP6200 series for a long time that printed quite well except for one thing—its internal self-maintenance functions. Instead of doing them during idle time, the do them when you start to print. Sometime this takes more than a few seconds but, more often than not, takes a long time.

I thought this HP aggravation only affects old HP 6200-series multi-function devices. However, the museum where I volunteer recently bought a current HP MF printer for the information desk and it does the same thing. As a visitor was leaving they asked me for a hard copy of an online document and I hit "print." They had to leave before the HP decided to finish its maintenance routines and belch out the requested copy. So, no, still a serious issue IMHO.

Ink is expensive because today printers are typically sold at or below cost and the profit is in the ink. Epson has some tank based printers and the ink cost is more reasonable but the printers are more expensive and I’m not as impressed with the print quality. John Galt is right, look for AirPrint enabled and you should be good.

I use a CanonC65, but I didn't buy it. I would have bought an entry level maserati (new) for the same cost

it does not have a scanner.

If I were buying and HP for myself for BW/Color I'd find out which newer model uses the least expensive ink, and had decent reviews, most of not all of them are using the same nozzle technology under the hood and the newer models should be supported by HP for macOS for a few years, but that's entirely up to HP.
