4 days of iPhone messages and texts vanished - why?

Hello friends,

I plugged my phone into the computer this morning to charge and it started to backup. The backup failed for "The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-54)" (which I have been getting a lot of lately) and I noticed 4 days of iPhone messages and texts had just vanished off my phone, their entire text history.

I have been getting messages that my iCloud is almost full (still have half a gig to go) and now I have almost 2 gigs free (so 1.5 gigs have been deleted since yesterday????)

Has anyone else had this issue? What can we do about it? I don't like some glitch or apply design deleting my stuff for me - especially without notice.

iPhone SE iOS 13.3.1 and iTunes 12.10.4.2 (both were up to date prior to deletion event)

Thanks for your help!

iPhone SE, iOS 13

That’s why you back up your data. If you didn’t do that, any lost data is on you.

That said, the phone shouldn’t just delete random data, and https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205597 addresses your issue.

I'm a bit confused as to why you say "That's why you back up your data" that's exactly what I was doing when I noticed it. It may have happened earlier of course and maybe it's not related to the actual back up part. Maybe, maybe not. Strange coincidence though.

Thank you for the link - I will explore those options.

I should mention that I was using a PC to do the backup with no known issues and a recently completed virus scan (nothing detected).
