Error connecting to the Apple ID server

I recently purchased a new iphone and when i tried to do the "Erase All Content and Settings" option, it said "Verification Failed" and that there was an error connecting to the Apple ID server. I have to trade the phone in, and the person helping us with the phones told me to try and go on the computer and delete it from there. The problem I have now is that I have a chromebook, and it will not sync with my iphone X. Has anyone ran into this problem, or may have any ideas for me to try?

Do you have access to another WiFi network where you can try? That has worked for several people.
