Sim number transfer

I transferred a new number to my SIM card in my iPhone. After the number gets activated, iPhone is still registered to the old number and won’t let me change it. FaceTime and iMessage are both sending and receiving with the old number, without success of course. How can I update the settings so it recognizes the new number?
