The current iPhone, which I had bought second hand, has apparently been blacklisted and I do not understand why as like I’ve said, I’ve bought it second hand. From a pawn shop.

Whoever owned it must have reported as lost or stolen to the carrier who then blacklisted it so that it could not be used. You will never be able to use it. Try to retrieve it to the pawn shop for a refund then purchase a phone from Apple that you can use.
