Restore Error 112: backup can't open

When trying to restore my MBP 15 from a TM backup, I get "The backup cannot be opened: Error 112" and the backup fails. The MBP was erased in preparation for trade-in, but I changed my mind and want to restore it from its own backup.

Help.

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.12

It sounds like you're seeing an error message when you try to restore your Mac from a Time machine backup. Check out this article If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine. This article will give you the steps you can take to troubleshoot issues restoring your Mac from Time Machine.

Let me know the results and have a terrific day!

Thanks but I had already looked at that page and doesn't provide me a solution. I've tried Online Recovery (Restart + Ctrl+ R), then I select "Restore from a Time Machine Backup" , then a list of available Backups appear (I have my main backup on the Time Capsule as well as a copy on an external SSD), but none of the Backups will work. To be clear, I erased the HD for the trade-in, then reloaded OS Sierra when it was returned to me. So I also tried Reinstalling the Mac OS from scratch then trying to restore from the Backup after this clean install. But still comes up as error. The Backup is named for my older 15" MBP ( I just updgraded to a new 16"), so does the error have anything to do with the source file names?

Thanks.
