Mail seems to have lost the ability to preview individual messages BELOW the list of messages, to the right of the mailbox list. Preferences - Viewing no longer includes a "classic view" option either. Is there any way to get the preview window UNDER the list of messages?

On the menubar, click on View (instead of Mail, Preferences). Uncheck 'show preview at the right side'
I tried that but it did not add the preview below the list of messages. Note that I have been using a Mail plugin (Daylite Mail Integration) for years that adds a « column » on the right side of the window. It has not affected my ability to put the preview window at the bottom of the Mail window until Catalina. (To be fair, migrating to Catalina was rough for me. It caused several major problems, and this is one of the minor issues.)
Well... I started my Mac this morning and all was in order. I guess it was just being temperamental on Saturday... it has been ever since I updated to Catalina on New Year's Eve. If only every issue on this Mac would fix itself... iCloud is my next (possibly time-consuming) challenge... sigh.
