Time Machine error: can't back up because disk no longer encrypted?

Hello, MacBook Pro (mid-2014), since yesterday I've received the following error message: "Time Machine did not back up because the backup disk was previously encrypted but is no longer encrypted." I restarted, did a software update (now on 10.15.3), no change. The backup is to a 5TB external drive (with 600GB still free) which I've never had any previous issues with and did not make any recent changes to.

Anyone else having this problem? Thanks.

I was able to fix this issue by going to Select Disk in Time Machine settings, then removing the disk, then re-adding it and unchecking "encrypt." (Apparently my previous backups were not encrypted either, but I'm not worried about that.)
