How can I create a folder which does not upload to iCloud (lives locally on my Macbook)?

I have a Zoom video file that's about 455 MB in size. I just need to keep it for a few days before deleting it. However, after the file has been converted on my MacBook, it begins to upload to iCloud. I tried to click the "X" button and it simply does not stop uploading.

Is there a way of keep iCloud sync on but to specify a folder that does not sync? I feel this was set up as either all in or all out: all files uploaded or none are, and this lack of customization is becoming a bit frustrating.

Not all folders on your Mac are syncing with iCloud.

  • If you enabled iCloud Drive, then all items on iCloud Drive will sync with iCloud.
  • If you also enabled Desktop & Documents, these folders will also sync between your devices with iCloud.

But any other of the folders in your Home folder are only local folders, for example the Pictures folder, the Music folder, the Movies folder. if you keep the video in your Movies folder, it will not upload to iCloud. Or you can create any number of additional folders in your user Home folder, outside of desktop and Documents, where you can save your local files.
