how to remove duplicate contacts in iPhone XR

This is for "iPhoneXR" not ipad/mac

I have duplicate contacts littered across my contacts in iPhone.

I do not have duplicates in Icloud.

I have the same contacts (without duplicates) in Gmail although my Gmail a/c in "passwords & accounts" is only set for mail (not contacts,calendars, safari etc) on my iPhone.

If I delete one of my duplicate contacts on iPhone, BOTH are deleted.

Any useful help very gratefully received.

In Settings app, go to Passwords & Accounts and temporarily disable "Contacts" on every account that you use to sync the contacts with.
Reboot your iPhone.
Reverse changes made in step 1.
If unresolved, repeat steps 1, then delete Contacts app.
Reboot your iPhone before you reinstall Contacts app through the App Store app.
