I have a new iPad Mini 5 and want to move as much as possible from my old iPad Mini 2. The Mini 2 is backed up in iTunes as of this week. Can I use the restore feature from that backup to the new iPad to make the transition? Does doing that make sense? What other options should I consider? I have iCloud storage too.

Restoring from your iCloud (or iTunes) backup will restore everything that you had selected for backup (check your iCloud settings on your old iPad). The backup doesn’t include the actual Apps, but does record which Apps need to be automatically downloaded from the App Store upon restoring the backup to a device.
As such, all Apps - with the caveats that (a) the App remains available within the App Store, and (b) is compatible with the target device - will be reinstalled on the device to which the backup is restored.

If the major iOS versions differ between the source-backup and the target, you may encounter difficulties. You cannot restore a backup to an earlier version.
If you can, I suggest that you take both iTunes and iCloud backups - and, as an insurance policy, copy any important data/files to a cloud storage service.

Yes, thanks for that very quick response. I have not attempted the restore yet, but I now have every reason to think that it will go well. I was mostly thinking it might be an issue because the two devices use different operating systems. I’ll make sure the new iPad has the latest one after I restore the old iPad’s backup to it.
