27-inch iMac Radeon Pro 570X

I am having trouble finding information about this online. I am considering purchasing an 27-inch iMac that has the Radeon Pro 570X. My current computer is a Windows 10 PC with a 2012 era GeForce GTX 680. Would the iMac's Radeon Pro 570X be more powerful than my 8 year old GeForce GTX 680?

Thanks, for your advice.

The most advanced game I will play is Sim City from 7 years ago.

Unless the developer has updated it, it is unlikely a 7-year old game with run under macOS Catalina 10.15.X. Catalina can run only 64-bit apps.

As we don't know your exact SIM City version, you can use this online database to see if it runs under newer OS versions:

or, better yet, check with the developer.

I ended up going for the iMac 27 inch with the 8 core i9, Radeon Pro 580X and a 1TB SSD. I am really happy with this purchase; this iMac has the most amazing screen that I have ever seen before. I also upgraded it to 32GB of ram. I also got Apple Care on it as well.

At first, I did not know if I should go for the Vega 48, but from my research when using FCP there is not much of a performance increase from the 580X to the Vega 48 (at least when editing 4K with H.264). Plus with the amount of video editing I do 5 minutes vs. 10 minutes for encoding does not really matter to me.

Thanks for your help!

You would be happier with an iMac that has the Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB of GDDR5 memory for FCP. Get it with 8GB of RAM and then purchase 32GB of RAM from either Crucial.com or Macsales.com and buy the largest SSD you can afford. Never buy RAM from Apple, way over priced! As iMacs are sensitive to using quality RAM I strongly recommend those 2 vendors as they sell very high quality products, have reasonable prices, offer lifetime warranties, and have great service. You can always buy external storage for storing large libraries such as your music, photos and movies.

As for your Windows needs, yes Boot Camp will work fine, however you may also want to look into Parallels which allows your to run Mac OS and Windows simultaneously. Unless you are doing some serious gaming or other graphics intensive Windows app using Parallels works great and is extremely convenient.

One last thing, buy AppleCare, it will extend the warranty to 3 full years and is worth every nickle in the event you suffer a hardware failure outside the normal 1 year.
