I can't authorize my new laptop. Stated could not authorize more than 5. went to I-tunes and chose authorize, showed less than 5, but nonetheless, I de-authorized my old laptop and cellphone, but still get a message saying I can't authorize more than 5.
I don't understand. there weren't 5 to begin with and now there are only two. How do I fix this?

The phone does not count in the authorizations so does not matter for this purpose; only the computers count.
If you are at 5, you can use the command "Deauthorize All" which is found under the Account menu, and then re-authorize just the ones you are still using. For more details, see here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201251
