Remove Akamaihd.net redirect from Mac

Hello All,

I just spent the last three evenings trying to remove a redirect-virus from my mac-book. I have three web-browsers (Safari, Firefox, Chrome) all of them had a locked default browser named Akamaihd.net that would redirect my browser to Yahoo! , stocked full of phishing adds and malware. After several attempts guides/videos and looking to Mac'Support, I finally found an article that had a step by step guide to remove this malware from a number of locations on my mac -crazy how deeply imbedded this virus was.

I wanted to share the link incase anyone else is having this issue:

Note: I didn't go as far as downloading the malware program in Step 4 (perhaps another time) but the guide steps 1-3 got the virus removed...

Best!

Perhaps I miss-spoke on the topic 'Virus vs' Malware/Adware' but according to several sites on the topic malware is a broad term that includes viruses. Yes?

"Viruses are a specific type of malware (designed to replicate and spread), while malware is a broad term used to describe all sorts of unwanted or malicious code. Malware can include viruses, spyware, adware, nagware, trojans, worms, and more."

Yes, that's what I originally thought about macs but after a lot of recent investigation on the topic, Macs can and often do get infected with viruses, malware and other pieces of malicious software that can cause problems.

Adware falls under the heading of malware and is primarily not dangerous, but very inconvenient because the software can change the browser home page, bringing unwanted advertising on the screen or even installing a new toolbar. This adware can inadvertently download malware.

Although they do build a lot of protections into macOS and OS X that people don't see and interact with. Unfortunately, in many cases, this is proving insufficient. Cybercriminals are getting smarter. Malware, in particular, is getting good at sneaking into computers silently and causing problems.

Thank you for your correction. Perhaps this conversation will help others understand the difference between Viruses and Malware/Adware.

My main objective was to share the malware link incase anyone else was having the same issue with this particular adware on their mac (it appears this topic has escalated on the web the last few months).
