What is the best way to gift an apple watch & take advantage of the trade-in offer?

the current watch is an apple watch 2. should i just purchase a gift card?

You can trade in the old watch at the same time you buy the new one,

Whatever is most convenient. There are too many variations to choose from, which is why I wasn’t sure what to do. If it were a surprise, i’d have to buy the watch first, but i may not be able to use the credit they’re offering for the old watch
