Mac keeps rebooting after trying to update

The mac needed to be updated and I started the update. Since then it has started to reboot unexpectedly. I have tried the reinstall OS in safe mode and through the internet. The computer keeps rebooting and I cannot get out of safe mode. At least that's what I think because the screen is black when I try signing in. What can I do about this?

Hey there Mtz_07,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand your Mac is restarting unexpectedly along with other issues after attempting to update. I’ll be happy to help with this.

Boot into recovery mode on your Mac and run First Aid:

Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

If no issues are found, restart your Mac and see if you can boot up as normal and check if your Mac is up to date.

If issues are found and you still can’t update or boot into safe mode, try to reinstall macOS using the steps from the following link. While this should retain your user settings and files, it’s always a good idea to make a backup before doing this:

Reinstall macOS

I have tried to boot into recovery mode and once I get there. Mac OS recovery starts examining volumes and then I have to login using my apple ID and password.

I enter all of the information and then it tells me that "There are no users on this volume to recover".

I have also tried going to the apple on the left hand corner and chose Startup Disk. Once in there it says to choose a startup disk, but nothing appears. The only option I have is to restart and it takes me back where we began at a login screen that takes me no where.

Hi Mtz_07,

Thanks for those details. It’s interesting it presented you with a Apple ID prompt when you ran First Aid. Do you use Filevault with your Mac at all? Do you have a Time Machine or other backup of your data from before updating?

If not, try to reinstall macOS using the Option-Command-R keys when your Mac restarts and see if this has any impact on this.

If you continue to have issues after that, erasing the HD may be the best option but make sure you try all options to reinstall macOS first and if you can log into your account at all, even in safe boot, make a back up.

Cheers.
