Mail app opens to a year ago

Hi folks,

So a small, but very annoying issue: The mail app for mac os when opened, scrolls down to about a year ago. It doesn't lock into a specific email, just always scrolls way down, forcing me to scroll all the way back up to the most recent mail. I have tried messing with preferences and just can't get it to stop behaving this way! Any tips out there?
