DOWNSIDE to changing your Apple ID

My current apple ID is my gmail email address. My information/identity has been "seen" on the black web per my ID protection service. All of my email addresses (yahoo, gmail, iCloud). I would like to start over. Create a new apple ID with a newly created iCloud.com email address. For years every time I bought a new apple product and said I hated my gmail address being my apple ID I was told I couldn't change it. Now in the apple retail stores (Ridgeland, MS and Memphis, TN) I have been told I can. I have found articles on Apple that say I can. BUT, I just had someone in support tell me I CAN'T. My understanding is that I will lose everything I have ever purchased in iTunes or the App Store. Also I can't migrate my files in iCloud to the new ID. Although a work around seems to be just uploading from my hard drive to the new iCloud account........ So can anyone give me advise? I just want to wipe out my existence online as much as possible under my old information and start over.

You can use the following instructions to change the email that you use as your Apple ID without losing anything. See: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

and be sure to note the following from that link:

Before you change your Apple ID

Sign out of all Apple services and devices that use your Apple ID. If you want to use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to change your Apple ID, stay signed in with your Apple ID on only that device.
