iphone/ipad sync with exchange server, but ical and mail won't

So, here is the situation:

iphone and ipad set up to sync contacts, calendar and email with my work via setting up the account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Account Info -> server: web address (minus the http) of the webmail server, username and password of my account)

However, the same settings in Mail / iCal don't work. Interesting thing is: I can send mail from my work account after setting this up (arrives in gmail as sent from my work address) - however, I don't receive any emails and ical doesn't sync.


1. Add account: Enter work email and password
2. Says 'searching for mail servers for the specified address'
3. Says 'The Exchange 2007 server “company server address - but a different one that I use for the ipad” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.'
4. I continue
5. I then get to a screen that shows the incoming mail server as listed in step 3. I try my password with that and get the same message.
6. I then replace that server name with the web address used successfully on the ipad
7. I then continue and it sets up the account
8. Looking at the settings it has created, I get:
- Internal server (the one I entered, that I use with the ipad)
- External server: autodiscover.[company].com
- User / Pass as standard
Advanced options:
- Internal server path: EWS/Exchange.asmx
- Internal port: 443
- External server path: [Blank]
- External port: 443

Any thoughts? Info you need? I just find it very surprising that I can get the iphone and ipad set up in seconds, but have no luck with Mail and iCal....

(note: company doesn't officially support Macs, hence me trying to figure it out on my own!)
