Native resolution issue with a Samsung C49RG94SSU 5120x1440 @ 60Hz

Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019) with the following configuration

2,4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9

32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB

I bought a Samsung C49RG94SSU connected through a HP Docking G4 and the original Samsung Display Port Cable.

Also if the maximum native resolution of the docking is 3840 x 1440 @ 60 Hz

the maximum resolution reached is 3840 x 1080 @ 60 Hz.

I think is an EDID issue but how can I solve?

Does anybody ever tried the Moshi 5k usb-c to Display Port cable to arrive to 5120 x 1440 @ 60Hz?

Perhaps on your actual monitor change your display port version to 1.4. That will allow it to handle higher resolutions coming from your thunderbolt port. If it's 1.2 or lower it won't do the 5k as far as i understand.

i will try this adapter instead of Moshi:

The only way I found to mitigate the issue is to connect the same macbook to the monitor with 2 separate cables:

1st source Display Port in 2560 x 1440 @ 60

2nd source HDMI in 2560 x 1440 @ 60

With the PBP menu I put 16:9 (16:9) to have 2 WQHD monitors.

In System Preference -> mission control > flag Display Have Separate Spaces

Surely is not the best solution for gaming, but for work purposes is the best workaround I found.

UN-check:

[_] Displays have separate spaces

System preferences > Displays > Arrange

Drag the blue blocks representing each display into the correct order as they appear on your bench.

Then they are treated as one large "Extended desktop", and ALL well-behaved Applications, Including games, should be able to use them as one big desktop.

My DP are already configured in 1.4

The problem is surely tied to macos, with windows I don't have problems with same cables.

With that setup, the Mouse can drag a window across the divider between displays. If you leave half on each display, each half will scroll and be updated "the right way".

To play a game, launch the game, then try "full screen" or stretch its window across both displays.

I confirm that with the cable mentioned the monitor reaches the full resolution also with my macbook pro 2019.

This is the product:

YIWENTEC Cavo da USB-C a DisplayPort 7680x4320 Adattatore HDTV 8K @ 60Hz 4K @ 144Hz per nuovo MacBook 2017 2018 Dell XPS (2M, 8K)

Hello hcintegrity,

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are trying to change the resolution on the connected external display, and it does not show a specific resolution you want. Hold the option key and click Scaled in the settings to see if the resolution you want appears.

"Set the resolution for a connected display

If you have more than one display, additional resolution options are available after the display is connected.

On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.
Press and hold the Option key while you click Scaled to see additional resolutions for the second display."

HDMI was invented for running HD V sets. It has been stretched to cover as high as 4K, but there is substantial black magic involved in getting it to work at high resolutions.

Although that display has an HDMI input, it can not support full resolution reliably over HDMI. You need to be using DisplayPort.

If you are not successful using a single Third-Party ThunderBolt to DisplayPort adapter, you may need to engage picture-by-picture and use two DisplayPort cables to run the display.
