Stuttering effect while GarageBand is in background

I use iRig Pro Duo to connect my guitar to my MacBook Air 2018 (macOS 10.15.3). I use GarageBand (10.3.4) mostly as a practice tool, most of the times it's in the background, and i have iTunes or YouTube active with some song or video that I play along to.

Recently my guitar sound has been stuttering while GarageBand is in background, if I switch to GarageBand it all comes back to normal, but when I switch to another app guitar sound starts to stutter again. I've tried closing/opening GarageBand, restarting laptop, reconnecting my audio interface to no avail. MacBook is not overloaded while it's happening, I have GarageBand opened with 3-4 tracks and iTunes or Chrome with few tabs.

I had this problem few month ago, I hadn't changed anything prior to its appearance, struggled for couple of weeks and then it disappeared only to surface again.

Has anyone had this problem before?

Hi mandjzi,

Thanks for posting your question. As I understand it, you're having some audio issues when using GarageBand with other apps.

Knowing that switching back to GarageBand seems to resolve the issue is helpful. You mentioned this happens when you have 3-4 tracks in your GarageBand project. Does it happen when you have only a single track as well? This would help to narrow things down a bit.

Also, to verify, when you say the Mac isn't overloaded, are you looking at Activity Monitor? If you haven't yet, it might be helpful to see if there's another process running that's using significant CPU resources: See how apps affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity

To narrow things down further, you could test this in a newly-created administrator account to see if you're able to replicate the issue there. This would tell you if the issue is system-wide or user-specific: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

I hope this helps get you started.

Best wishes.
