Option Command R on MacBook Air. Will it wipe drive?

I have obtained a Macbook Air which when it boots displays a white

screen with a grey circle and slash through it. From what I can find it

seems to be to do with version of OS needs updating. Anyways to solve

this I have found the "Option + Command + R" command to update it to the

latest version. Will this wipe the drive to do so as I want to keep all

the data on the drive.

Pressing Option + Command + r keys will start your Mac from macOS Recovery.

macOS Utilities window will open allowing you to install macOS without removing all data.

Quote:

The version of macOS offered by macOS Recovery might differ in certain circumstances:

  • If macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later has never been installed on this Mac, Option-Command-R installs the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available. And Shift-Option-Command-R isn't available.

If you acquired a use/pre-owned laptop, then you should erase the whole drive and perform a clean install of macOS to remove all traces of the previous owner to ensure that no malware or other problems exist. Here is what the previous owner should have done before selling the laptop, however, I never trust other people so I would personally wipe it myself just to be safe.
