What does TO in a gray box mean in mac Mail email list?

I just upgraded to Catalina, and now every entry in the list of emails for my inbox has a "TO" inside a small gray box in front of each entry in the list. What is it, and how do I get rid of it?

I have the year-old 27" iMac and Catalina 10.15.3

Go to the View menu and uncheck “Show To/Cc”.

You are correct that I right-clicked on a TO in front of one of my emails in the subject list. But the reason I did that is that it is the only TO visible in my mail window. You have a row of symbols (including the TO) and the word Subject as a title for the subject column. My mail program does not have that entire row. Do you know how I can make it visible? I looked over the View menu in Mail to see if there was something to turn on or off, but I couldn't duplicate your look.
