Google maps using safari pinch gesture does not work

I expect pinch gestures on the trackpad of my MacBook to basically work the same as pinching the screen on my iOS device. Pinch in to zoom in, pinch out to zoom out. This works as expected on Chrome but not on Safari. Zoom in zooms in the entire page not just the map and zoom out shows you the all open tabs view. This is deal breaker for me. I was actually going to switch from Safari to Chrome until I hit this snag. Is there a setting I can change or a workaround other than using Chrome?

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! I understand you have a concern when using your trackpad to zoom in and out in Google Maps via Safari on your Mac. I would like to help.

What you described is expected behavior when accessing Google Maps via Safari and using your trackpad gestures to zoom in and out. This was able to be reproduced on my end as well. You could instead use two fingers to scroll up to zoom out, or use two fingers to scroll down to zoom in. Click and hold+drag with one finger, moves the map around.

Thanks Becky, that does indeed work. The frustration is only mildly reduced however. In an app like LucidCharts, you use the pinch gesture to zoom in and out of a diagram. The 2-finger swipe (in any direction) pans the diagram. Not sure why Google Maps seems to be an outlier as it makes switching more of a challenge.
