I have 2 first generation airport express units. I reset them by pushing the small button but they no longer show up in my network. I am currently using mojave.
By 1st generation are you referring to the older 802.11g or first model of the 802.11n AirPort Express models?
The 1st Gen AirPort Express is model number A1264. We'll assume that these are the models of the Express that you have.....but would note that a number of users confuse the fact that the 1st Gen AirPort Express was really not the first version of the Express.
If you are not sure what model that you have, look on the side of the Express to locate the model number. It is hard to see, with gray lettering on a white background, so you may need reading glasses and/or good lighting to see the model number.
IF.....your inspections reveals that you have model number A1084 or A1088, these are not 1st Gen models and things get more complicated as far as being able to reconfigure the Express because AirPort Utility on the Mac, iPhone and iPad no longer support these older versions of the Express.
If you do have the 1st Gen model A1264 versions, it is normal for the Express not to appear in AirPort Utility......because it has not yet been configured. When it is set up again.......then......it will appear in AirPort Utility.
There are also different ways to reset the Express. We assume that you have powered them on for a minute or two and then have held in the reset button for 7-8 seconds, released, and allowed a full minute for the Express(es) to restart.

When you click on AirPort Express, that will start up the setup "helper" or "wizard". The wizard will take a few seconds to analyze the network, then suggest the correct setup for the Express. Follow the prompts to set up the Express again.
