Changing iCloud primary email address associated with your Apple ID

Is it possible to change the iCloud primary email address linked to your apple account? I know I can add a new alias but would like to remove the original primary iCloud email address and it appears not to be possible!

Is your Apple ID your iCloud address? If so you can't change it. If your Apple ID is a non-Apple address you can change it to another non-Apple address or your iCloud address. However you can't change or delete the iCloud address you created when you first open the account.

You can change (rename) your AppleID to any third-party email address, as long as it is not already in use as an AppleID:

See: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202667

You can change your Apple ID to any other email address* you control, as long as it's not already in use as an Apple ID. If your email address ends with @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com, you can't change your Apple ID to a third-party email address. You also won't see Change Apple ID on your account page or the option to delete your email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
