What is current recomendation for file sharing in Catalina?

Do I use SMB or AFP? AFP does not seem to work. I thought AFP was Mac's preferred file sharing protocol? Sharing a folder from a Catalina machine to another one, and two on High Sierra.

I can connect on the other computers via AFP but then the shared folder appears empty. I have all users and passwords set to the same thing. We do not need higher security than that.

Forgot to mention. Catalina and Mojave supposedly support AFP on an HFS+ formatted drive, but users are seeing inconsistent results. There's good info on it here.

Basically, AFP isn't a good choice from Catalina, even if the drive is HFS+.

We use a Synology NAS for our small home office. That runs on a version of Linux and we have no problem using AFP with it. A good thing for us since our main client loves to use characters in a file name SMB (Windows) doesn't allow.
