Time machine backups and thumb drives

I am using an external hard drive using the Time Machine for my backups. Can I also plug in a thumb drive ( at the same time) and copy just my photos or do I need to disconnect the external hard drive first?

You can use the flash drives while Time Machine is backing up. You just need an available port for the flash drive. However, you shouldn't copy your photos to the Time Machine backup drive.

They are not really related.

That is to stay, they are independent tasks and one will not interfere with the other.

You can have as many tasks as you like reading your photos.
