Printer software won't install

Hi! I haven't been able to print for years. I don't remember what caused it. I have a printer that's listed as Canon mp280 series and a macbook air on mojave. The software updater doesn't list any available updates.

When i try to add my printer, it says "the selected printer software is available from apple. Click add to download it and add this printer."

This is the only option it gives me for "use"! I can try to select another driver (I installed some from both apple's website and canon's. Neither work and I can't find them back in finder.) but it won't list any of the ones I downloaded!

It then starts loading, searching for the software, etc, and then gives me this error:

I don't understand how it can both be available from Apple and not available from the update server and I don't know how to fix it. Please help. This has been a frustration for many years.
