.HFS+ Private Directory Data - Duplicates? Can I Delete?

I am in the process of managing my storage and deleting some large, unnecessary files via the OS cleanup utility (System Information / Storage / Manage). When identifying Documents, several files appear to be duplicates:

• One located in the directory I created (Documents/Videos/Family)
• One located in the .HFS+ Private Directory Data (System/Volume/Macintosh HD/.HFS+ Private Directory Data?/dir_XXXXXXX/Videos/Family)

Are there actually two physical files, i.e. could I delete the .HFS+ location and not lose the "original?" Thanks.
