password for timecapsule

I'm transferring data from my time capsule to a new macbook - it's asking for the password for server "Airport-Time-Capsule.local" - where can I find that? I have the password for my Time Capsule, but not the server.

It is your file sharing password.

There are multiple ways to set this up so assuming you did not reset it the default is your device password. The latest versions of the airport wizard tend to set this to same as wireless password. Try that first. If you really cannot remember.. press the reset button for 1sec.. make sure you do it just briefly otherwise you will do a full reset.. (no files are lost doing this so that is not a problem just you will need to redo the setup). You then have full access without password for 1min so you can change it.

If you can already access the TC in Airport Utility.. click the icon of the TC.. Click edit.. that means the password is stored in your keychain. You can look it up in there.

OR and even easier go to the top menu and open passwords. Note you must have the TC in edit mode otherwise this will be greyed out.

In an effort to speed up our home Wifi (for backups), I want to attack our weakest link

Depending on how you set things up originally for the Time Capsule, it might have up to 3 different passwords:

1) The wireless password........that devices use to connect to the wireless network that the Time Capsule provides

2) The base station password, also known as the device administrator password.......used to access the settings on the Time Capsule

3) A disk password......used to access the data on the Time Capsule hard drive

Sometimes, users set only one password for wireless, base station and disk. Others set up a different password for the wireless network and use the same different password for the base station and disk. Yet others set up a separate password for each of items listed above.

With luck, you can see the passwords that have been assigned to the Time Capsule as follows:

Open AirPort Utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the picture of the Time Capsule to select it.....and a smaller window will appear

Click Edit in the smaller window

Now, shift the focus of your eyes to the AriPort Utility menus.......up at the top of the screen where you see other menus like File, Window, Help, etc.

Click on the Base Station menu

Click on Show Passwords
