sandisk extreme ssd

I've got an Iphone 11 ProMax. Trying to connect a Sandisk 1 TB exteme SSD drive to it, via the Apple lightning to USB 3 connector. It's powered and it won't recognize the sandisk. I just watched a video on youtube about it, which recommended it. The adapter will work with a USB flash drive but I've seen on youtube that all of the external HD's need power, which this adapter provides. I called Apple support and they had no clue, completely useless. I'm trying to easily move files off of my iphone (videos) onto an external HD for video editing.

I think it’s formatted for windows / it’s recognized by windows when I plug it in. Yes, I have the lightning plugged in to power it as well. My thoughts were the cable that came with the Sandisk SSD is a USB-C that has a USB 3 adapter on it, as a potential problem or the drive needs to be formatted in exfat?

My first guess would be the formatting.

While Apple doesn't seem to have the compatible formats listed themselves, this site has a list of ones that the user tested and confirmed to work. I don't see NTFS, which could be how that drive is formatted.
