We have to mail the old iPhone back but are not sure if we took the SIM card out

We bought a new iPhone online already setup for our phone number. We have to mail the old phone back but are not sure if we take the SIM card out or what we do to clear that phone before mailing back.

we bought a new xr and are returning a 6.
