question about screen resolution/scaling on 16” mbp

i am interested in picking up a 16” mbp, but have questions about it ....

for display properties such as the scaling/resolutions in macos that i can choose .... are there more options available than the standard 5 which i have on my late 2013 15” mbp ?

there is a normal setting in the middle, and 2 notches above that to get more on the screen. i set mine to one notch above the normal setting in order to have more display space, however some text comes in very small (like the text you see in a file copy dialog progress popup).

on the 16”, there will be a bit more physical screen size, but dont want to get stuck with a preset that shrinks text down too small. so my thought was if there are more resolution choices, i could maybe use one thats good enough for real estate as well as text size on the built-in screen.

thanks

These are the options I've got on mine, there are multiple of the same resolution due to the ability to select refresh rate. If you go under Standard (1x), there are quite a few more, but are not retina scaled (pixel doubled).

Here are the built in options for the 16" MBP, the default setting has been moved one higher than your late 2013 15", and text has been easy to read and not too small.

Alternatively, here's a free app that you can use to change the resolution of your MacBook Pro:

Works pretty well, and there are lots of options.

thanks for the tips. will look into it

waiting for this year’s mbp updates to see which one i should buy but keeping an eye on the current 16” model as a preferred choice.

i suppose the best way to see the resolution settings in action would be to visit an apple store and check it out.

if easyres doesnt tax the computer too much or interfere with app functionality i should be good to go using it on my current model as well as a new one when i buy.

tried easyres on my computer and it has a few scaling options on top of the 5 or so that are standard on my mbp.

in the app, i tried with one resolution setting lower than my current and it scaled the screen to the normal setting, where windows and text are a bit too large.

since i don't have dedicated video hardware, your outlook might be different on a 16” mbp.

if you use easyres, i’d greatly appreciate it if you could post a screenshot of the resolution choices it gives you ?

im guessing that models with dedicated video can support more in-between increments above the standard choices in system preferences.

thanks for that .... looks like a lot more resolutions available than i can get on mine.

that's good news, at times i feel cramped for real estate on the built in screen but other times i need larger text, so i could use easyres to change the setting quickly.

last thing i'll do is head to a store and take a look at a 16" with several windows open to see how much benefit a 1/2" actually makes.

Changing the actual screen resolution is not something Apple thinks is worthwhile any longer, which is why they do not make it simple and obvious.

By default, Apple runs the screen at its maximum resolution. That gets the most graphics on the screen as possible, and perfectly crisp. But on a Retina display, the text will be microscopic.

The five "scaled" choices are ONLY for the text. The text is scaled at 1.2 or 1.5 or 1.8 or similar times actual size, to make it readable. Those additional settings should be labeled "User Interface looks Like" for best understanding.

that is what it looked like (the text is scaled globally).

i like the macos scale setting that is the 4th one from left (largest text) because it puts more on the screen.

only issue is that some dialogues (like a finder copy operation that i mentioned before) can show some really small text thats annoying to deal with.

i dont wear glasses (yet) but when in dark mode i find myself cranking up the brightness to read some of this stuff. and when i switch to a browser window where most page backgrounds are white, the glare causes me to dial down on the brightness.

maybe apple can improve this situation with the new mini led models that will be coming out, but probably will be out of my reach anyway since im budgeting for the current 16” model if i find the right config with a used one.

still, my 2013 model does not have true tone as does the 16” model. maybe true tone alleviates some of the eye strain.

question about screen resolution/scaling on 16” mbp
