Problems following upgrade to Catalina (10.15.3)

I've had several issues following the latest upgrade:

  1. Whole system slower
  2. Apps (such as Firefox) frequently crash and can't restart
  3. System Restart very slow, and often fails, forcing a hard reset

These are just the most frequent examples since I upgraded two days ago.

I'm using an iMac from late 2013 - so there should be no issues re hardware.

Is anyone else having similar issues - and have you managed to fix them? Or can anyone suggest a course of action that may iron out these difficulties? I'm already on the latest version - 10.15.3 - so there's nothing further I can do there.

On a more general point, I'm frustrated that Apple has pushed out yet another annual "upgrade" - with the usual pedantic and quite frankly ridiculous Apple "rule" that once you've upgraded your system, you cannot go back. They really ought to allow for, shall we say, "buyer's remorse" and give the option to revert back.

The report doesn't look to bad.

One thing that stands out as a problem is Trusteer

Antivirus software: Apple and Trusteer

[Running] com.trusteer.rapport.rapportd.plist (Trusteer LTD - installed 2019-10-27)

Try removing Truteer and then run another EtreCheck Pro report.

Only this time "Allow Full Drive Access" so that we can see the Diagnostic and Crash reports.

Hmmm... I obviously spoke too soon. The problems have returned. This time, not only is Firefox having problems on Catalina, so too now is Google Chrome. Even to me, essentially a technophobe, this points to a macOS Catalina problem. At 10.15.3, I'm fully up to date, so there's nothing more that I can do. I read somewhere that this problem, identified early on in Catalina back in August 2019, was supposedly fixed by the beta 6 update. (Incidentally, how do I know if I'm on beta 6 or 5 or whatever...? All I have is "10.15.3"...?)

Last night I re-installed macOS Catalina, but it made no difference. Of the three browsers I have, only Safari is (so far) problem-free. Reverting to an earlier version of macOS isn't an option for me, as I don't (can't) use Time Machine.

In addition, whenever I restart the iMac, whether I've encountered a problem or not, the system always tells me, "macOS restarted because of a problem..." ??

Being up to date on the software, there seems to be no fix on the horizon, which is pretty shoddy. I've never been so disappointed with a major upgrade before :(

Report below.

To my untrained eye, the only things that jump out are the fact that there are 42 32-bit apps (although it doesn't name them); and, re Virtual Memory Information (near the bottom of the report), there's 4.47GB of cached files.

Grateful for any further assistance.

Thanks, the (forced) restart of the system and then re-run of Etrecheck worked. Took about 5 minutes.

I had a scan of the report myself. Main points were:

  1. Major issues - none
  2. Minor issues - a long list, some of which I've dealt with myself (some 'orphan' files) and other stuff. I was surprised how much junk it found that I no longer use (BlackBerry program files, old printer files, etc). I manually binned everything I knew I didn't need anymore.

The important thing is - Firefox is working again! :)

The whole computer seems to be a bit quicker too - hurrah!

I don't know if Etrecheck performs its own fixes while it runs the check. I can only assume it does, because up until 20 minutes ago, I was about ready to wipe this Mac clean!

Incidentally, during the afternoon, I also got in touch with Apple, and concentrated specifically on the Firefox/Catalina issue. The Apple rep pointed me in the direction of a 7-month old Mozilla forum, which was discussing the problems between Catalina beta 5 and Firefox.

Anyway, thanks to all who responded - much appreciated.
