"This monitor does not support HDR playback.” - 10.15.3 Upgrade Error

Error Pops Up After 10.15.3 Upgrade: This monitor does not support HDR playback.

I’ve plugged my projector into this Mac, and now I get this error.

It pops up on both the macOS and on the Projector Screens.

It is a small, portable Brookstone Projector for the desk.

MacBook Pro 15”, macOS 10.15

My Official Update on All of This:

————-

macOS Catalina 10.15.3 Update is the Culprit:

So, after a long talk on the phone with Apple (3.5 hours OMG), it turns out it is the 10.15.3 update that causes this. So, I've downgraded to 10.15.2 from a Time Machine backup that I created prior to the 10.15.3 installation. This is a pure example of why to backup your Mac prior to upgrading. The 10.15.3 upgrade's part is still being looked into. It has been reported by few people. Booting into Safe Mode and using a New User made no difference.

MY Responsibilities in the Mean Time.

As for troubleshooting, my responsibility is to use an Apple brand USB-C cable, and contact the manufacturer(Brookstone) and update all applications. . Also, get a new projector (if desired). My projectors both do not have the option of installing updates. So, when it comes down to getting a projector, I am recommended to get one that has the ability to install updates. Also, I will contact Apple Rep as things come up.

This iTunes Issue is N/A Windows 10 HP Laptop:

This is fully operable on my HP laptop with Windows 10 on it. And it was working like a charm prior to the 10.15.3 update. Quite mind boggling indeed. The HP laptop just doesn't have as good of sound output as that of my Mac (which is why I use it on my Mac). Using these HD Projectors on my Windows 10 HP Laptop is of not issue and all all works fine on iTunes:

Here is Something Interesting:

Using my Virtual Machine, I get this error, which basically tells me that my Mac doesn't have an HD-Type of display. Ok, so select: "Play SD" - it plays just fine on a Virtual Machine (Windows-in-a-window) that is simply dragged over to the projector.

It seems I have to play this in SD (Standard Definition). Then it works --- at least on the Virtual Machine.

So, how do I get this to run in SD on my Mac?

It was working with the same cable plugged in, prior to this 10.15.3 update of Apple's.

I've tried my other projector and my other 4 HDMI cables.

So, it has to be something with this update. Are you using 10.15.3? What is is cable you have (brand and length, model number even)?

Apple's going to call me in the morning my time. So, I'll update this post afterwards.

But, please update me with the cable info, perhaps providing a picture of if you could. Thanks,

High Dynamic Range, also know as Hi-Color, 10-bits/color or 30 or 32 -bit color is only supported when the hardware supports it. All others get an error when the settings suggest 32-bit color, but the devices says only 8-bits/color is supported.

If you Mirror displays, and either device does not support 32-bit color, you get the error message for both, because Mirroring uses ONE display generator hardware for BOTH displays.

Thank you for the reply!

This Issue is Intermittent:

All movies that do this only reside in the 4K & HDR movie Library. Thing is: Sometimes, they do give me this error. Sometimes they don’t give me this error.

I don’t know why it started after the update. It was working fine until this last update. When I plug it in through my projector, the error then pops up on my Mac’s own screen too. Unplugging the projector makes the Mac play it fine.

Mirroring it through AirPlay gives me the same issue, too.

Once Again: This Issue is Intermittent.

Where Would I have Modified this?:

Could this be a setting somewhere in my Display Settings? Where would I change that setting? I might have fiddled with it, and just don’t remember.

4K & HDR Movie Library:

I get this error message on both displays (my MacBook Pro and the projector), when plugging the projector into my MacBook Pro. then it disappears on both when unplugging the projector.

Does being 4K and/or HDR play any role in this? They AirPlay from my iPhone 6 and then out to my MacBook Pro and out to the projector just fine, and they play from my Apple TV 3 out to the projector just fine.

3 Examples of these Movies Are:

  • Mission: Impossible 2
  • Mission: Impossible 3
  • The Hunt for Red October

Specs of Your Cable?:

Doing some research, I've come about a cable on a non-Apple forum, supposedly fixing it: Belkin UltraHD 4K/8K HDMI Cable (2m). Supposedly, it sufficiently downgrades the output of the MPB so that it matches 4K of the projector (the output device). Is that the cable you are referring to? I'm in hopes of getting that cable in the mail on Monday.

If not, any knowledge of the brand (Belkin? Monster?) and model of that cable?

I am highly curious.

Thank you.
