A dvd that will no longer play.

I was watching a dvd on my iMac and paused it, then left for several hours. When I came back, the movie would not play. Moreover, it created a second black screen, in addition to the paused screen. I managed to eject the dvd, but now when I insert the dvd, it no longer plays; all I see is the black screen.

I have tested both the dvd on other machines, and other dvd's on my apple dvd player; both the dvd and my dvd player work fine. At this point I am wondering if the problem could be a file that was created by my computer when the dvd was stuck on pause, a file that now is preventing the dvd from playing. Is this possible? If so, where can I find the file, how can I identify it, and can I remove it? And if it is not a file that is the problem, what could the problem be?

Thank you for considering this.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

Great news, you were spot on when you said...

Some pref is borked in your 1st user account, tough part is to know which one.

With DVD player quit in the original account look in this location...

/private/var/db/BootCaches/Big Long Hex Number/app.com.apple.DVDPlayer.playlist

Try trashing the app.com.apple.DVDPlayer.playlist file, then try DVD Player again.

Please uninstall the following:

CleanMyMac X.app

macpaw.CleanMyMac4

Mac OS is extremely secure if simply left alone and kept up to date when updates come out. Adding cleaning, antivirus and other "maintenance" apps offers ZERO benefits and only serves to make a mess out of Mac OS and makes users experience various issues that seem like it's a Mac OS problem when the issue really is those apps.

Please locate the developers uninstall instructions and uninstall these apps ASAP, next restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally and test. If the issue persist, please post a fresh EtreCheck report.

Good luck!

Thanks, BDAqua, for all the advice. I couldn't find the location that you suggested; if you can give me any more hints as to where it may be, that would be great. Otherwise, I'll just have to live with it.

Now, however, I have a new and bigger challenge. When I turn on my computer, the DVD player screen automatically opens up, the pinwheel starts turning, and continues doing so for several minutes. Any attempt to open up any other program is on hold until the twirling pinwheel stops. The same thing happens when I put a DVD into the player.

I don't know if this is related, but this latest glitch started after I upgraded to Catalina.

Any ideas?

Sorry, but what I said above still applies:

I tried resetting the SMC, but still have the problem. Are there any other possible solutions?

Did you ever find that file & trash it when DVD plater wasn't running?

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

Or use the paperclip at the bottom of a Reply to attach the full report here. :)

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

I found a file called com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist and trashed that. It didn't help. In my frustration, I also trashed a few other files that were created on about the same date (I can be pretty compulsive — and stupid — sometimes), then had second thoughts about them. So I didn't empty the trash until I had copied the trashed files onto an external hard drive, then unplugged the drive from my computer. The dvd player's performance didn't improve.

I have downloaded EtreCheck. How do you want me to proceed from here?

Thank you — and stay healthy!
